The Happy Gnome (former location of Chang O'Hara's Bistro, 498 Selby Ave St Paul, MN 55102-1727 http://thehappygnome.com 651-287-2018 - Chang O'Hara's Bistro used to be at 498 Selby Avenue in St. Paul, Minnesota, in the beautiful Cathedral Hill neighborhood. While in business, it used to serve regular pub cuisine but also various Irish and Asian influenced foods were on the menu.

The Bistro was famous for being the nightlife place to hit the club for jazz and blues. It featured jazz band on weekends and on special occasions. It had interesting décors that were not to be forgotten, including its famous red dragon statue that attracted the attention of the twin cities passersby.

Unfortunately in 2005, Chang's O'Hara's Bistro had to be shut down due to bankruptcy problems. It had to close its doors and file for bankruptcy because it had lost a sexual harassment lawsuit involving former workers. The owner is the person who runs the Sweeney's Saloon and The Dale Street Wine Bar which are also in the twin cities, and those ones are still open.

In the place of Chang O'Hara's Bistro is now The Happy Gnome. Happy Gnome operates Sundays through Saturdays from 11:30 to 1: AM. Happy Gnome serves such weekend brunch items as the Huevos Rancheros, which is a three corn tortillas layered with cheese and onions, smothered in genuine house made hatch New Mexico red chili sauce and topped with two eggs. You can also enjoy the Gnome Benedict, which includes two poached eggs, prosciutto French bread smothered in house made chipotle Hollandaise sauce, served with American fries. Other great selections are the chorizo con huevos, the late rizer, and the salmon omelet.

For dinner, Happy Gnome also features small plate menu such as smoked salmon and cassava cake, which is shallot-cornichon dressing, micro greens, and fried capers. Duck confit bruschetta, butternut squash gnocchi and many more are on the list of tasty items.

For vegetarians, there are many fresh veggies and fruits dishes. Their spinach, orange and toasted hazelnut salad include ginger-orange topped with mustard vinaigrette. Apple cheddar salad with walnuts is yet another great pick. It is a plate of mixed greens and honey-apple cider dressing.

They have a separate menu for the bar as well as for their firehouse room. In the bar, you can enjoy various selections of drafts for about five bucks, wines of various colors and makes, and other variety drinks. In the Firehouse Room, you can enjoy items like Seared Ahi Tuna which includes wasabi, pickled ginger, ponzu, and flat bread or buffalo chipotle sausage made of locally produced, sweet red cabbage slaw, and a spicy mustard crème.

So if you have heard a great deal about Chang O'Hara's and its jazz and blues reputations, you heard well, but it is no longer in existence. Happy Gnome features live jazz bands as well so you can still visit the location and enjoy the environment. They still have the same beautiful interior with several cozy fireplaces and beautiful outdoor patio for hot summer nights.

These are the few easy things you can do everyday to Live On Happy.

And ever remember the quote from Abraham Lincoln, he says that, “Most people are about as Lucky as they make up their minds to Be.”

January 29th, 2010 by invnya in Uncategorized · No Comments

It is ofttimes frustrating to attempt to plan meals that are planned for one. The mission, should you choose to accept it, is to make cooking for 1 a challenge rather than a test. Use this opportunity to try new and exciting cuisines. Perhaps 1 of the best things about cooking for One is the fact that it isn't quite as expensive as cooking for two. This means that you have a little more money in the grocery budget with which to plan and make your meals.

1 thing you may want to keep in mind Yet is that when making for One, if you prepare foods that are freezable. It may save more time (and in the end money) if you cook the full 2-4 servings that most recipes address for and freeze the leftovers in one serving portions for a later point in time. This gives you with a freezer full of foods for those darks when the {thought|dreaming up cooking just seems beyond your capabilities. This also gives you with doing the work once and loving the fruits of your movements many times over. This is a great position to be in if you ask me.

We are receiving more and more recipes and cookery books that are designed around the concept of making for 1. No matter what situation placed you in the position of making for 1, On That Point is no cause that you shouldn't enjoy great food that is exciting and pleasant simply because you are dining alone. At That Place is no harm in enjoying a fabulous meal with a glass of wine and great music whether you are cooking for One or 1 hundred.

Remember you are what you eat up and if you relegate yourself to boring meals that lack excitement and spice that is what you will become. Still if you decide to reach out and try new and exciting dishes with every meal you prepare once making for 1, it will show in the way you embrace life-time in other areas as well. While we should not live to eat, we should also not limit ourselves to eating to live. enjoy the foods you prepare whether the portions are big or low in size of it.

If you do not wish to invest heavily in cookbooks that associate to making for single, it is quite possible that your local public library will have a few from which you can find some excellent recipes tips and resources. While you are At That Place be sure to check out their option of exotic food cookery books in order to spice things up a bit. You never know what treasures you may discover on the shelves or your local library. You may even find local resources on classes that center on the idea of making for 1. If the library proves to be a bust as far as resources go, the Net is full of recipes, points, and hints for those who are making for 1.

Even though we may think we have become so modernized - particularly in the kitchen - that we are immune to the concerns that plagued cooks of past generations, the fact is our cooking is still influenced by things beyond our control…like the weather. Since cooking is really a science, understanding how changes in the weather can affect the way ingredients react and interact with each other can be helpful for even the beginning cook.

Baking is one of the areas where a cook will most likely notice the variables of weather. Flour, cereals and grains tend to absorb humidity and dry out when the weather is cold and dry. That is one of the reasons why most bread recipes will list a range for flour. As you develop as a cook, you will be able to sense as you are adding flour to cakes, cookies, pastries and breads whether you have reached the right amount. The general rule is that you may need more flour when the weather is cool and dry than when it is hot and humid.

Rising bread is very easily affected by weather and changes in temperature or drafts. This is why old recipes recommend letting the bread rise in a warm, dry place, free from drafts and wind.

Sugars are also affected by the weather. Damp weather may be reflected in your sugars after they have been cooked - such as in meringues and candy-making. My mother used to tell me that it was impossible to make fudge when it was raining. In fact, the more humid the weather, the longer cooking-time many candy recipes will require. This makes the likelihood of burning or scorching more likely, so I stick with my mother’s recommendation. The same can be said for any cooked jams or jellies. They may take longer to set or gel when the weather is wet and humid, so it is best to wait for a cool, dry day, if possible.

Creaming butter and sugars can be affected by climate as well. Warm, wet days may prove problematic. In old days, it was known that stormy days, or days when a storm was on the horizon were not good days for churning butter. The moisture and humidity can make it very challenging for the butter to come together and “clump.”

Some cooks may already know that room temperature eggs and butter work better in most recipes. Egg whites will absorb more air if they have been allowed to come to room temperature and butter will incorporate better if it is around 65 to 70 degrees.

It is important to consider how foods are stored to insure cooking success. Even in our climate-controlled homes, the weather can have an influence. Dry goods (like flour, cereals, sugars, etc.) should be stored in tightly lidded containers. This means putting them in some sort of jar with a lid or a canister and not leaving them in the bags or packages they come in. Sugar will harden and clump if it absorbs even the smallest amount of moisture - so when the weather gets humid, make sure things are stored properly.

Even experienced cooks may find that recipes behave differently depending on the weather. The main elements to consider are temperature and humidity level - be prepared to make adjustments to your recipes, or avoid certain projects when the weather isn’t cooperating.
